Pear Blossom Spring Fair:
Everything Old is New Again!
The Heart of Medford Association (HMA) is announcing several new
changes within its organization and its upcoming 30th Annual
Pear Blossom Spring Fair, its premier event and one of the
largest events in Southern Oregon. Leaving the organization,
after building its infrastructure and successful business model,
is its Executive Director, Betsy Manuel, often referred to as
"Miss Heart". Replacing outgoing President, Carole Jennings, is
local architect and board member, John David Duffie. Also,
joining the HMA board is commercial building developer, Laz
Ayala; Web designer, Ryan Mallory, and Harlan Ward, owner of
Grilla Bites Restaurant.
HMA has engaged Joy and Larry Marshall of Marshall Fundraising
Management, Ashland-based event management and fundraising firm
to manage the Pear Blossom Spring Fair. According to Duffie,
"The annual Pear Blossom Spring Fair, directly following the
Pear Blossom Festival Parade, has grown immensely, well beyond
the capacity of Alba Park. After 29 years, we felt that it had
also become a bit staid. So we moved the event to
Medford's largest park, Hawthorne Park, to accommodate more than
30,000 potential attendees, 200 vendors, etc. and changed the
days of the event from a Friday/Saturday to a more
"family-friendly" Saturday/Sunday. We also believed that we
couldn't continue on with this event without a professional
events management firm to assure us of success with this new
venture. We chose the Marshalls, based on their fine reputation
as major fundraising consultants and event producers and
marketers".
Adds Duffie, "The Marshalls are already making an outstanding
contribution by creating several innovative, fresh enhancements,
including an uplifting, positive image theme: "Everything old is
new again!" and changing the name of the event from Pear Blossom
Street Fair to the Pear Blossom Spring Fair. They are forming a
special section for regional nonprofit organizations, including
historical groups, to inform the public about their unique
missions; providing fun, interesting and educational
attractions, including an enhanced "Kids Zone" featuring Kids
Unlimited, Science Works (futuristic Space-oriented activities),
and Wildlife Images bringing their traveling family of
interesting animals for the kids to visit with. They will also
have Alpacas from SOJAA (State of Jefferson Alpaca Association)
for the visitors to meet".
Joy Marshall says, "While there is still limited
space for retail vendors, the food vendor category is filled. We
are also soliciting sponsors to underwrite the cost of bringing
in a professional stage to the event in order to showcase,
what we term, 'charitainment' (entertainment for charity)
benefiting HMA and its year-long program of Medford events. We
are also endeavoring to bring in some of the area's finest
musical talent, as an added attraction, in addition to local
radio station participation".
The 30th Annual Pear Blossom Spring Fair will be
held Saturday, April 10 from 10 AM to 7 PM and on Sunday, April
11, from 10 AM to 5 PM at Hawthorne Park, Medford.
The Heart of Medford exists to promote a cooperative business
environment in downtown Medford as a regional center, working
together to enhance, support and advocate for businesses in the
downtown area. In other words, the HMA has two primary goals:
increase participation and cooperation of businesses in the
downtown area and bring foot traffic back to the district.
Other events they sponsor include Art in Bloom in May, The Taste
of History in June and Winter Light Festival in December.
